KEY TERMS

Bureaucratic – is the structure, and set of regulations in place to control activity, usually in large organizations and government. It is characterized by standardized procedure (rule-following), formal division of responsibility, hierarchy, and impersonal relationships

Civilians – a person who is not a combatant during times of armed conflict

“Green Parrots” – are small winged cylinders about four inches long that flutter in the air when pressure is put upon it and then released. These devices are antipersonnel mines that were designed to look like toys in order to attract children and wipe out a generation of “future soldiers” – Green Parrots is a term that is used to describe these specific land mines in Afghanistan –

Human Rights – universal rights to which every person is entitled because they are justified by a moral standard that stands above the laws of any individual nation; best explained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Although every person is entitled to these rights, there is no guarantee to have these rights.

Immigration – the act of moving into one country from another, usually due to oppression in the original country

Non-Profit Organization – an organization that is not conducted or maintained for profit, whose net earnings are devoted exclusively to charitable, educational, or recreational purposes. Government organizations are not included.

Propaganda – a set of concerted facts aimed to influence opinions or behaviors on a large number of people

Refugee – a person who flees for safety

Refugee Camp – is a temporary camp built up by governments or organizations to shelter refugees. Sometimes camps may last years, and many people may live in one camp.

Rehabilitation – the process of helping a person achieve the highest level of function, independence, and quality of life possible.
